Make the Law of Compensation Work for You

The Law of Compensation explains that when you intentionally stay in the flow of giving and receiving, you reside within the divine order of things.

The central idea behind this law is to serve the world with love and allow others to serve you. giving and receiving

This is part eight of a twelve-part series about ancient mystical teachings called the Universal Laws or Hermetic Principles.   The focus of this article is twofold;  The Law of Compensation and creating art exploring this principle.

Many believe that by harnessing the Universal Principles, you can achieve inner peace, a deeper connection to the universe, and a greater understanding of yourself.

In my Soul Artist Experience series of classes, we explore the Universal Laws, among many other topics.  Using our art journals to examine each principle illustrates our insights.

The Law of Compensation provides Soul Artists with inspiring material as they create art journal pages about this law,

For example, artistically conveying the idea of harmonious and dynamic exchange, flow, and balance.  Serving the world with love.  Living in the grace that arises with joyful giving and receiving.  Being open to and appreciative of all the gifts in life.  Circulating love and positivity. Nourishing the universe through friendliness, gratitude, love, joy, and compassion.

The Law of Compensation builds on the lessons of the Law of Karma. compensation

In essence, this law states that you will be compensated for your actions. What you do impacts what you get back. You get in return what you give.

It is one of the beautiful compensations in this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.  – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Wisdom traditions tell us that the universe operates through harmonious and dynamic exchange.  The intention behind giving and receiving is critical.  When you intend to create happiness for both the giver and receiver, you are harnessing the law of compensation to work for you.

We know that joyful giving can create fulfillment for the giver.   Dr. Elizabeth Dunn, a social psychologist at the University of British Columbia, tells us that being generous with others is an effective way to feel joy.

“When we use our resources to benefit other people, we actually can end up being happier ourselves,” Dr. Dunn said.

law of compensationOne global study by Dr. Dunn and her colleagues found that philanthropic people tend to be happier on average than those who don’t.

“In order to match the benefit to the happiness of giving to charity,” Dr. Dunn said, “you would have to have about twice as much income.”

Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. David Simon explain this idea further in their book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga.

They show us that the return is proportional to the giving when it is unconditional and from the heart.

This is why the act of giving has to be joyful.

The frame of mind has to be one in which you feel joy in the very act of giving.  Then the energy behind the giving increases many times over.

They also teach us that happiness is life-supporting and life-sustaining.  One way to practice being in the flow of giving and receiving is to set an intention to give something to every person you come in contact with today.  It might be a kind word, a smile, or a silent prayer or blessing.

Similarly, being open to and appreciative of every gift that comes to you during the day is a great way to stay in the flow of giving andLaw of Compensation receiving.   This could be appreciating the sunrise, fresh air, the song of birds, your dog’s greeting, or a rainbow.  It might be a small kindness, a hug, or a helpful suggestion.  When you take the opportunity to notice and circulate love, caring, affection, appreciation, and acceptance, you are in the flow of giving and receiving.  You are harnessing the law of compensation.

The law of compensation also teaches us to trust that we will be compensated for our work as we remain open to receiving in all the many ways that the universe can deliver.

It’s about receiving compensation for all your contributions to the world around you, including the positivity, joy, love, and kindness you spread.

The intention behind our words and actions fuels the process.  We have learned that our thoughts and intentions are incredibly powerful through universal laws.  Our intentions power our ability to manifest our thoughts into existence.

The Law of Vibration taught us that the Universe is made up of energy.  The Law of Attraction tells us that whatever our energy is will be compensated with like energy.

As an example, assume someone performed a good deed for another person but did so with resentment.   What will be returned to the giver is resentment.

Law of CompensationHowever, if your intention is generous and joyful as you do the good deed,  then generosity and joy will be returned to you as compensation.

If you are like me, it’s easier for you to give than receive.  Whether it is a gift or a compliment, I struggle with being a gracious receiver.  As I have walked my spiritual path, this lesson has come up for me repeatedly.  I have learned more about this from Dr. Brené Brown.

She says that when you attach a negative value to receiving help, you assign a value when you offer it.

If you cannot receive help without judging yourself, then in some deep way, you’re judging other people when you offer it.

Many of us attach self-worth to being the giver.

But being successful in relationships and life means being skilled at giving and receiving.

Dr. Brown goes on to say that receiving love and receiving help is much more vulnerable than giving. Because she says, “You can stay armored up and give, but you cannot stay armored up and receive.”

I know that if I can grow and become a more gracious and grateful receiver, I will allow others to experience the happiness and joy of giving.

To harness the power of the law of compensation, intentionally serve the world with love and allow others to serve you. Allowing yourself to remain in the flow of giving and receiving will place you within the divine order of things.
