Balancing the Sacral Chakra

Svadhisthana is the Sanskrit name for the Sacral Chakra.  Balancing the sacral chakra will connect you to your creativity, intuition and more. This vital second chakra is located in the pelvic region just below the navel. It is the center of both your creativity and emotional life.

The sacral chakra is the home of intimacy and connection; the feminine expression of your being.

Both men and women house elements of feminine expression.   The acclaimed book Eastern Body Western Mind calls the second chakra the home of our right to feel. sacral chakra balancing cobra pose

Our emotions give us information about our own well-being.  When our right to feel things is discouraged, we can become numbed and separated from important information about our own balance.  How often have we witnessed young boys being told not to cry?  Or heard the words; ‘shame on you for feeling that way.’  We often identify our sense of self from our emotions.  I am grateful.  I am sad.

The core of our emotional life, the sacral chakra plays a major role in our relationships and in our social interactions.

In his book Soul Mission, Life Vision, my teacher, Alan Seale, says; “Regardless of the relationship that will ultimately be established, we first meet one another in the second chakra.”

He describes the initial chemistry that happens when we meet someone.  You may feel drawn toward another person, feel neutral about them or feel discomfort around them.

As a growing relationship unfolds, layers of connection are formed as we move up the chakra ladder.

An indicator of the vitality of your second chakra is in social interaction.

As an introvert, I am comfortable meeting new people for brief periods  — in small doses.

When I feel overwhelmed by too many people or feel guarded and uncomfortable, this is an indicator that my second chakra needs some restoration.  Not only do I need solitude to recover, I need to bring myself back in balance.  Creativity is one of the ways I can get myself back to equilibrium because creativity springs from this chakra and I know myself well enough to know what I need to do to balance.

We learned the root chakra focus is personal; ’what do I need right now in this moment?’  As we move to the second, sacral chakra, the focus expands to ‘we’ vs. me.

Alan Seale points out; ‘The root chakra energy is assertive; action-oriented; masculine. The first two chakras together balance the life force energy for the inner dance of masculine and feminine.’

If you read my Blog Post on the Law of Gender, you learned that whether you were born a male or female, you have both masculine and feminine energies.  A balanced human being has an awareness of their masculine energy and feminine energy and lives in harmony with both.

When there is balance in your second energy center, creativity can flourish.

Moving forward with creative projects or manifesting your desires in life will be easier.  Taking that a step further, I believe that being creative helps balance your second chakra; and when your chakra is ‘in tune’ this enhances even more creativity.

Intuition is another aspect of Svadisthana.

While intuition actually begins in the first chakra because the root is all about tuning into the physical messages of the body, it blossoms in the second chakra.

Balance in the second chakra creates a more fluid connection to your inner knowing, empathy, and awareness of others’ feelings.

Sexuality is another important aspect of the second chakra.  Svadisthana affects emotional aspects of sexuality for men and both physical and emotional aspects of sexuality for women.

Many life experiences can impact the vitality of the second chakra from living in a volatile household to being made to feel guilty about pleasure to restriction of movement as a young child.

Seeing our adult self as a healthy sensual being is integral to talking about the sacral chakra. sacral chakra balancing butterfly pose

Desire is a spiritual emotional impulse that inspires us to embrace change.  When we are in touch with our desires, we feel the impetus and longing to move forward.  A balanced sacral chakra has the capacity for satisfaction and physical pleasure from all of our senses; the smell of gardenia on the breeze, a cool drink on a hot day, a loving hug from someone dear to us.

If you read my first blog in this series, you may have done the Chakra tuning exercise.  If you felt any constriction of energy in the sacral chakra area of your body, you may want to do a further exercise to open up the flow of energy for greater balance.

Exercise for tuning the Sacral Chakra

sacral chakraTo begin, sit in a chair with your legs uncrossed. As you do the exercise, mentally bring to mind the color orange. Begin to breathe, imagining energy flowing into the pelvic basket just below the navel.  Allow your breath to go all the way down into your sacral chakra. Feel this part of your body come alive.

You may feel warmth or sensation or some other signal that energy is moving there. If you experience resistance, be patient and gentle with yourself and ease your way into the sacral chakra with your breath. If there is a great deal of resistance, allow yourself several sessions of relaxed, intentional breathing to make your way in.

Take whatever time you need to be able to breathe freely down into your sacral chakra.

Repeat the following Sacral Chakra affirmations.  Do they ring true for you?  I am:

  • Creative
  • Comfortable in my body
  • Intuitive
  • In touch with my feelings
  • Comfortable with my sexuality and sensuality
  • Capable of joy and finding pleasure

How to Balance Svadhisthana

Healing the second chakra can be complex.   If someone has experienced abuse and other emotional wounds they may require the help of skilled practitioners.  One way to balance the second, (or any chakra) is to get a reiki session from a reputable practitioner and receive healing energy from them.

The balancing techniques mentioned here are those that can be accomplished personally within our body’s own healing processes.

Besides meditating and being open to creativity in your daily life, you can also balance the second chakra by honoring the sensual aspects of yourself and respecting your body.

Staying in touch with your emotions and making a commitment to process feelings in a healthy way is another way to stay in balance.

Left nostril breathing helps tune the second chakra as it brings forth lunar energy. (Close your right nostril and inhale and exhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril only, for 5 to 10 rounds.)

Yoga Asanas, Sounds, Colors, and Gems are other ways to balance this chakra

svadisthana balancing goddess poseSome yoga asanas that help to align Svadhisthana are goddess pose, seated pelvic circles, butterfly pose, and cobra pose.

The color for the second chakra is orange.

Eating orange foods and wearing orange colors help in balancing Svadisthana.

Gemstones for the second chakra include amber, calcite orange, carnelian, and hematite.  You can place the gemstone on the area of the chakra while lying down to help open and align it.

Chanting or toning sounds can also help bring svadisthana back to balance.

Sounds create vibrations in the body, and these vibrations help the cells work together in synchronistic harmony. The mantra sound that corresponds to the sacral chakra is the sound VAM.  You can practice this in the linked video.

Other tools for sacral chakra health are essential oils.

Ylang ylang and neroli are calming essential oils. Cardamom can awaken a less active sacral chakra.  Sandalwood and sweet orange can help maintain a well-functioning sacral chakra.

As you bring more balance into your chakras, you become fully yourself and feel at home in your body.  That’s where real health and real power are.
